Palestine and its trauma: the dreams of children

Dreams represent one of the most useful channels to understand the meaning that a person from his own life and his way of perceiving the world. But what about the dreams of these Palestinian children How we can help you understand what is going on in the world and in the minds of children?
Dr. Shafiq Masalha, Psychologist Palestinian, has collected about 300 dreams of children in refugee camps in the West Bank. Delivering 150 children notebooks and crayons, he asked them to represent, in writing or by design, the dreams you remembered to have done. The results were terrifying: 78% of these dreams related to the policy and 15% of his own death by martyrdom.
Some examples of dreams:
- A 11 year old girl dreams of having the bomb attached to his body and is in front of Prime Minister Sharon and his predecessor Barak blows himself up, the two die while they survive.
- Another little girl dreams of finding an unexploded Israeli missile, so he takes it and throws it against a settlement. Many Israelis died and the police learned to build them every night to hit the settlements, until they ran.
- A thirteen year old child repeatedly dreams of a child who has seen die that asks for help.
- Her brother dreams of the body of a fellow pierced by bullets.
- A boy dreams that he returns home from school, an Israeli missile strikes and remains beheaded.
The notebooks are full of red and black, which are the two powers in conflict. The children paint their dreams as heroes, as those who will put an end to occupation, playing at war because they were educated to this state of affairs. Only know this fact since they were born, they can not represent themselves even in a dream, a different life. Many of the designs end with the phrase: "We want to be like all the other kids," to emphasize the terror and the deep sense of deprivation of childhood that affects all children born in the shadow of conflict.
The terror is fueled by the violent scenes that every hour local television broadcasts to preserve intact the sense of hatred and revenge of the Palestinians toward the Israelis, as well as also stressed Dr. Iyyad Sarraj, the center of the Gaza Mental Health. I wonder how many and which types of patients are turning to this center, I wonder how it is possible that the entire population is still sane with what lives and that causes every day.
Traumatized children are helped by small classes on the control of fears (eg songs that distract them from the sound of bullets), and on techniques for survival if the school is bombed. The mothers become alarmed when their children are bedwetting, are lazy or violent at home and at school. They do not know which is the least and can be considered fortunate. Their games are "Palestinians with Israelis" and "soldiers", you throw rocks and aim with the slingshot.
"We are not innocent adolescence," says Dr. Sarraj, "children are very politicized and heavily influenced by the situation in which they are exposed." Even wishes for their future are contaminated by the climate of hatred and resentment towards the Israelis dream of becoming soldiers to protect their homes, or even worse martyrs, because the parents have told them that it will go to Paradise.
And yet death is something too far away from the kids, can not come from them. By nature, children are afraid of violence and defend it by pulling out their aggression. 93% of them say they feel vulnerable. 59% of teenagers have stated that their parents do not have the ability to protect them. From 2000 to 2005, approximately 760 Palestinian children have been killed and 2,500 jailed. Of these 95% were tortured or abused in prison.
