Spread an investigation that reveals how the extraction of uranium from the mines of Areva, the nuclear energy giant, is seriously endangering the population of Niger. Areva is the company that owns the technology of the EPR, the power that the government wants to build in Italy.

Niger's population at risk for the extraction of uranium from the mines of Areva
In collaboration with the independent French laboratory CRIIRAD and the network of NGOs ROTAB, we have developed a monitoring of radioactivity in air, water and land around the towns of Arlit and Akokan, a few kilometers from the mines of Areva, ensuring that the levels of contamination are high.

The radioactivity creates more poverty because they cause many casualties. With each passing day the local population is exposed to radiation, surrounded by poisoned air, land and water pollution. Meanwhile, Areva invoice hundreds of millions of dollars by exploiting the natural resources of one of the poorest countries in Africa. Areva presents itself as a company cares about the environment, but the Niger reveals a very different truth.

Our analyzes show that in four out of five cases the radioactivity in the water exceeds the limits allowed by the World Health Organization. Despite this, the water is distributed to the population. Exposure to radiation also causes respiratory problems and not coincidentally in the region of the mines of Areva mortality rates related to respiratory problems are twice that of the rest of the country. In addition, local NGOs accuse hospitals, controlled by Areva, had hidden many cases of cancer.

Half of Areva uranium comes from two mines in Niger, a country which remains poor despite more than four decades is the third largest producer of uranium in the world. The nuclear energy giant has signed an agreement to start digging a third mine between 2013 and 2014.

We are calling for an independent study carried out in Niger, the mines and the surrounding cities, followed by a thorough clean-up and decontamination. Must be activated controls to ensure that Areva complies with the international standards in its operations, taking into account the well-being of workers, the environment and populations.
